Inspired by my interest in space travel, the modern chess set features my favorite elements of rocket shapes, discs and cones, themes which run through many of my designs.
The queen’s crown represents the Star of David, and includes 6 hand set diamond-cut zirconia which can also be seen in the King’s crown. The stones have been set upside down – with the point upwards, to echo the crown's cone shapes.
The Bishop’s collar is inspired by the planet Saturn’s rings, and I have placed it at a diagonal angle, as a reminder of the Bishop’s diagonal move.
The shape of the Knight is inspired by a medieval knight’s helmet and a traditional blacksmiths anvil that is used to shape horse shoes.
The pieces were created in anodized aluminum, with accents of highly polished stainless steel. Techniques used include cnc cutting, hand forging, sawing with a jeweler's blade, filing and polishing.
Materials: Sandblasted glass, stainless steel, anodized aluminum and sterling silver, black and white zirconia.
Board size 45 cm x 45 cm.
Height of pieces ranges from 4 cm to 11cm.
