Inspired by her interest in space travel, this modern chess set features Laura’s favorite elements of rocket shapes, discs and cones, a theme which runs through all of her designs.
The pieces were created in anodized aluminum, with accents of highly polished stainless steel. Techniques used include high precision computer aided cutting, hand piercing (sawing with a jewelers blade) filing and polishing.
The Queen’s crown represents the Star of David, and includes 6 hand set diamond-cut zirconia which can also be seen in the King’s crown. The stones have been set upside down – with the point upwards, to echo the crown's cone shapes.
The Bishop’s collar is inspired by the planet Saturn’s rings, and I have placed it at a diagonal angle, as a reminder of the Bishop’s diagonal move.
The shape of the Knight is inspired by several elements including a medieval knight’s helmet as well as a traditional blacksmiths anvil that is used to shape horse shoes.
